[Actual vehicle introduction]
- The Nagoya Railroad Kiha 8000 series is a semi-express diesel railcar manufactured between 1960 and 1964 for direct trains from the Meitetsu Line to the JNR Takayama Main Line.
- Its configuration is a combination of a body with large continuous windows similar to those of the 7000 and 7700 series, and the running gear of a JNR diesel railcar. However, in order to fit the running gear into the small cross-section of the car body, various measures have been taken, such as placing the radiator at the rear of the car door.
- It boasted deluxe accommodations, including air conditioning and heating, as well as convertible cross seats.
- Initially, it was painted in the same style as the JNR express diesel railcars and began operating as the semi-express [Takayama] between Jingumae and JNR Takayama.
- In 1970, the service was extended to Tateyama on the Toyama Chiho Railway and became the Express [Kita Alps]. In 1976, the service was repainted to match the limited express diesel railcars and developed into the Limited Express [Kita Alps].
- Although it was in active service for a long time, from 1988 it was operated in three-car formations consisting of only the Kiha 8200 series with extended bodies, and all of the cars were retired in 1991.
