-The German development center of East German company Awtowelo, which was taken over by Russia, received a race car order in 1949. It is not an ordinary order, but a reservation from Vasily Stalin, the son of Russian chief leader Joseph Stalin.
-The project was not only a technical challenge but also a political one. Stalin's son liked speed very much and wanted to compete in Formula 2 of the racing series. But he not only competed but also wanted victory. To make this possible, nearly half of the employees were dedicated to the project.
-Based on Auto Union's pre-war know-how, two formula cars were produced, both loaded with V12 engines with a displacement of approximately 2 liters and a power of 152 hp.
-The race car was named 650 `Sokol` and was ready for the first test in 1951. In April 1952, Vasily transferred the car to Russia by plane. However, the carburetor had insurmountable problems, and although he participated in the race, there was no chance of winning. Eventually both cars were returned to East Germany.
-After the death of Soviet leader Stalin on March 5, 1953 his son, Vasily, did not get support from the new authorities, and the project lost its favor. Both remained in GDR, used for filming, and were soon forgotten. After several changes, one of the cars was housed in the German museum PS Speicher. The second car chassis is on display at the Saxon Industrial Museum in Chemnitz.
