- The 200 series is a Shinkansen vehicle developed for the Tohoku and Joetsu Shinkansen that opened in 1982, and has a reinforced cold and snow resistant structure due to the climate of the operation section.

- The body adopts a body mount structure that covers even the underfloor equipment, and is made of aluminum alloy to prevent weight increase.
-The frontal shape is similar to the 0 Series Shinkansen, but the nose is slightly longer, and the skirt has a snow plow that draws a unique curve, giving it a different impression.
- The E formation is a 12-car formation including a buffet car and a green car that appeared at the opening, and ran through Tohoku and Joetsu in ivory with a green belt.
