- The F-35 Lightning II is a multi-role fighter jet developed based on a plan to consolidate the various tactical aircraft operated by the U.S. Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps into one type of aircraft and its derivatives.
- Of the three F-35 models developed simultaneously - the F-35A for the Air Force, the F-35B for the Marine Corps, and the F-35C for the Navy - the F-35B is the most ambitious version.
- The F-35B, which was developed as a successor to the AV-8B Harrier II operated by the Marine Corps, achieves short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) thanks to a lift fan installed between the cockpit and the engine and a three-bearing rotating duct nozzle that can change the direction of the engine nozzle.
- In addition, it also has supersonic flight capabilities, stealth capabilities, and high situational awareness through sensor fusion.
- Because the aircraft mainly takes off from light aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships, most of the countries that adopt it have ships equipped with flight decks.
