- M48A5 was the final production type of the M48 Patton tank which gathered great confidence from the soldiers of the front in the postwar American tanks.
- The name of Patton tank started from M46 tank which was formulated in 1949, it was transferred to M47 in 1951, and was succeeded to M48 which development and production began in 1952 as its successor vehicle.
- While each type is being produced while continuing the improvement, a prototype tank M48A1E3 tank, which was refurbished such as equipped with a 105mm gun in M48A1 in 1975, was created, and it was formulated and became M48A5.
- The vehicle was not newly manufactured, but as part of the modernization renovation of the M48 Patton tank, each vehicle of M48A1 to A3 which had already been deployed was sequentially refurbished.
