Product Description
The USS Stevens was a Fletcher-class destroyer of the United States Navy, named for Rear Admiral Thomas H. Stevens, Jr. and his father, Captain Thomas H. Stevens.
The ship was laid down in December 1941, launched in 1942, and commissioned in February 1943.
The Stevens were originally fitted with aircraft catapults to operate seaplanes, but after September 1943 these proved unsuitable for operational use and the ships were converted to a standard design in place of the catapults.
The ship participated in the Battle of Kwajalein in January 1944, the Battle of Hollandia in April of the same year, the Battle of Morotai in September of the same year, and the Mindanao landings in April 1945.
After the war, she was decommissioned in July 1946 and removed from the Pacific Reserve Fleet in December 1972.
Stevens was awarded nine battle stars for her service during World War II.
Cartoonist Sam Glanzman, who served on the ship during World War II, drew on his own experiences to create a comic called "A Sailor's Story," which depicts the dramatic naval battles and the human drama of the sailors, set on the Stevens.
