- The M5 light tank was developed in the USA and is an improved version of the M3 light tank used by the Allies during World War II.
- The M3 light tank, which began production in 1941, was equipped with a star-shaped 7-cylinder air-cooled engine, but when the supply could not keep up, two V8 liquid-cooled engines were installed in the M3 light tank. An improvement plan was presented, and it was officially adopted as the M5 light tank in February 1942. By replacing the engine, the bad habitability was resolved, and the number of ammunition and fuel load increased.
-In order to improve productivity, the car body has a simple box structure, and the front armor plate of the car body has been improved, such as changing to a single-plate type with a large slope in consideration of the start of bullet avoidance.
-The M5A1 light tank has been improved with a new turret that extends the rear part and accommodates a radio, a larger hatch for the driver and co-pilot, and a new escape hatch on the floor of the fighting compartment. So, in the British army, it was called [Stuart VI] like the M5 light tank.
