- The Kiha 185 series is a limited express diesel car that was introduced in 1986 to replace the Kiha 58 series in the Shikoku area.
- The same series has a body design similar to the Kiha 183-500 series that appeared earlier, with a stainless steel body and FRP structure on the front. Three types were manufactured: Kiha 185-1000, the lead car without a toilet, and Kiroha 186, a semi-green car. The passenger doors were folding doors with a width of 850 mm, taking into consideration the specifications for local trains, and two were installed on one side.
- It was operated as JR Shikoku's limited express trains, but in 1992 some vehicles were transferred to JR Kyushu, and now it is mainly operated as limited express trains [Tsurugiyama] and [Muroto].
