- The E1 Series Shinkansen was introduced in 1994 and is Japan's first all-car double-decker Shinkansen vehicle nicknamed Max.
- Since 2003, it has been changed to new paint and was active until October 2012.

- The E1 series is a Shinkansen train of JR East that appeared in 1994.
- All cars have a double-decker structure, and the second floor of the non-reserved seats in the ordinary car has a seat arrangement for 3 + 3 people. As a result, the seating capacity of the entire train set has increased by about 40% to 1,235 people compared to the 200 series, realizing a significant increase in transportation capacity. In addition, a wide variety of spaces were prepared, such as multi-purpose rooms, shops, and wheelchair-accessible facilities.

- Headlights change to taillights (red) by switching the direction switch on the power unit.
