- The battleship Yamato, equipped with the largest large-caliber 46cm gun in history, was commissioned on December 16, 1941, immediately after the outbreak of the war.
- The ship became the flagship of the Combined Fleet in February of the following year, and after participating in Operation Midway and the Battle of the Mariana Gulf in June 1944, she was assigned to the US escort aircraft carrier force in the Battle of Leyte Gulf during Operation Shoichi-go in October of the same year. The first naval gunfire was fired.
- Although Yamato lost her sister ship Musashi in the same battle, she survived, but sank off the coast of Cape Bono on April 7 of the following year.
