- Until the end of the 1960s, the Spanish Air Force operated the Ju52, which was already obsolete.
- CASA developed the C-212 as a modern alternative with lightweight and reliable turboprop engines, and the first prototype made its maiden flight on March 26, 1971 under the formal designation T.12B. Ta.
- In 1974, the Spanish Air Force decided to upgrade its transport fleet by purchasing the C-212.
- Type 300 - Standard production model produced since 1987.
- The engine was replaced with a Honeywell TPE-331-10R-513C rated at 900 shp, and the propeller was replaced with a Doughty-Rottle four-blade all-metal propeller.
- Performance was improved thanks to winglets and a larger vertical stabilizer, and the aircraft had a more streamlined nose than the 200 due to an additional baggage compartment in the nose.
- Type 400 - An upgraded model that first flew in 1997.
- Equipped with a Honeywell TPE-331-12JR-701C engine with a maximum output of 925 shp, the aircraft size and performance are basically the same as the Type 300.
- Compared to the 300 type, many devices have been refined and improved.
