- The third Takao-class heavy cruiser, Maya, was commissioned in June 1932.
- Unlike Takao and Atago, a major feature is the large bridge, which did not undergo work to improve stability performance such as downsizing the bridge.
- After the outbreak of the war, it formed the 4th Squadron consisting of four Takao-class ships and participated in many major operations, but in 1944 it was sunk by the American submarine Dace during the Battle of Leyte Gulf.
