- One of the half-tracks developed by the US military during World War II was the M3/M3A1 half-track.
- Developed as a troop transport vehicle based on the M2 half-track, which was being developed to tow a 105mm howitzer.
- The rear personnel compartment was extended to increase capacity, a rear access door was added, and the ammunition storage cases were eliminated, allowing the compartment to accommodate 10 fully armed soldiers.
- It was officially approved in 1940, and mass production began in 1941.
- After 12,499 vehicles were produced, production shifted to the M3A1 in 1943, an improved model equipped with an M49 ring-mounted machine gun mount above the cockpit.
- 2,862 vehicles were produced by 1944.
