- Plans for this aircraft began in 1963 as a replacement for reciprocating engine passenger aircraft, as a small passenger aircraft with twin JT8D engines and a T-tail for 70 to 90 seats.
- The prototype made its first flight in February 1965, and the aircraft entered service in December of the same year.
- The DC-9 was a huge commercial success, recognized for its outstanding economy and high reliability, and 976 aircraft were produced, each one gradually becoming larger through repeated improvements.
- The DC-9-30 was the definitive model, with a fuselage stretched by 4.55 metres, wingtips extended by one metre, maximum takeoff weight increased to 55 tonnes, the aircraft could use several JT8D engines and had leading edge slats on the wings. 662 were produced.
