- The Su-17 is a supersonic jet military aircraft developed by the Soviet Union's Sukhoi Design Bureau.
- A swing-wing aircraft improved from the Su-7, used as a fighter-bomber and forward reconnaissance aircraft.
- The NATO code name is "Fitter", inherited from the Su-7, and depending on the variant it was assigned a code name ranging from "Fitter C" to "Fitter K".
- The Su-20 and Su-22 are export variants of the Su-17.
- The Su-22UM3K Fitter G is a two-seater model based on the Su-17UM3.
- Used in countries using later models of the Su-22.
- Equipped with AL-21F-3 engine.
- Poland's Su-17 series previously consisted of the Su-20R frontline reconnaissance aircraft, the Su-22M4 fighter-bomber, the Su-22M4R frontline reconnaissance aircraft, and the Su-22UM3K trainer fighter, but the Su-20R has now been retired and only later models such as the Su-22M4 are in operation.
- These aircraft have been modernized to comply with NATO standards for identification friend or foe devices, and are scheduled to remain in service until after 2010.
- By then, some units will have switched to American-made F-16C aircraft. This is because the Su-22M4, even though it is a NATO-modified aircraft, is designed and equipped fundamentally differently from NATO standards, making it impossible to operate the equipment required by NATO in a completely unified manner.
- This also applies to the Russian MiG-29A/G and Slovakia's MiG-29A, and future developments will be closely watched in terms of exploring the role of non-NATO aircraft within NATO.
