Product Description
- Original style S.6 before improvements
- Following the success of the Supermarine S.5 in the Schneider Trophy in 1927, R.J. Mitchell designed a successor, the Supermarine S.6, to specification 8/28.
- Improving on the earlier S.5 design, Mitchell now uses all-metal construction.
- It was decided that the 875 hp Napier Lion VIIB engine could not be further developed, so the S.6 was powered by a specially developed 1,900 hp Rolls-Royce R engine.
- In view of the cooling problems associated with such high power, the S.6 incorporated surface radiators on the floats as well as the wings, and Mitchell also arranged the airflow through the internal structure of the wing.
- Two aircraft (serial numbers N247 and N248) were built and delivered in August 1929 and operated by the RAF High Speed Squadron.
- Two S.6 racers competed in and won the Schneider Trophy at Calshot, England in 1929.
- The float shape and length are different from 6A and 6B.
