Product Description
-- A look of shock and amazement! Simple shield beam 115 series!
[Actual vehicle introduction]
The 115 series is a DC commuter train that began to be manufactured in 1963 as a version of the 111 series that was introduced in 1962 and was designed to be suitable for steeply inclined lines and had increased power.
A total of 1,921 cars were manufactured by 1983, with changes to their specifications, functions, and structure. They have been loved by many fans for many years as a representative of Japanese suburban trains in both name and reality, operating in almost all DC electrified sections across the country.
Originally, the headlights had a shape known as a "big eye" shape, but after minor changes were made to the vehicles (300 series) they were made smaller with the adoption of shield beam lights which improved illumination, and the vehicles that originally came with the big eye shape were gradually modified to switch to shield beam lights, changing their appearance.
The modifications continued even after the privatization of the Japanese National Railways, and from around the beginning of 1992, modified cars began to appear that had the outer casing of the large eyeball light left intact but had shield beam lights embedded inside in order to reduce costs.
The 115 series belonging to JR East's Oyama Train Depot was painted in Shonan color and was used as a medium-distance train on the Tohoku (Utsunomiya) and Takasaki lines.
There were still leading cars with a "big eye" remaining in the same section, but as a result of the aforementioned simplified shield beam conversion, the original big eye leading cars had disappeared by around the end of 1992.
However, as a countermeasure to a level crossing accident that occurred in the autumn of 1992, further front reinforcement modifications were made, and as a result, the simple shield beam modified cars disappeared in a short period of time.
In addition, some of the leading cars had a wider grey area at the front of the roof than typical commuter trains.
