Dune racing using cars became popular on the west coast of the United States in the 1960s. It later developed into a category of motorsports, and racing vehicles made to run in the desert were collectively called dune buggies. The Meyers Manx was one of them, and it was made by taking the chassis of a VW Type 1 (first generation Beetle), shortening the front and rear dimensions, and mounting a lightweight fiberglass open body on top of it. Similar vehicles were released by many manufacturers, but the Meyers Manx made by BF Meyers & Co., headquartered in California and led by Bruce Meyers, was the one that stood out for its high quality. The Meyers Manx was made as a racing vehicle, but many young people also enjoyed driving it on public roads. BF Meyers & Co. went out of business after producing about 6,000 Meyers Manxes between 1964 and 1971, but was revived under a different owner in 2000 and now produces EV versions as well.
