- The Mi-17 is a medium-sized multi-purpose helicopter designed by the Soviet M.L. Mili Moscow Helicopter Factory and is arguably the most successful Soviet helicopter.
- The domestic designation is Mi-8MT, the export designation is Mi-17, identified by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization by the NATO codename of [Hip H].
- In 1964, plans for the Mi-8M, an improved version of the Mi-8, began, and the Mi-8M, which first flew in 1975 and showed good performance in subsequent flight tests, was transferred to the Soviet Union in 1977 as the Mi-8MT. It was officially adopted by the military and started production at the Kazan Helicopter Factory.
- The Mi-8MT exhibited at the 1981 Paris International Air Show was given the new name Mi-17 as a name for overseas.
- Due to its simple, rugged construction and high versatility, the Mi-17 and its variants are used in more than 12,000 military and civilian aircraft around the world, including Eastern European countries, the Middle East, Africa, China, and North Korea.
