Product Description
--An English gentleman who spent the rest of his life in Ina Valley!
[Actual vehicle introduction]
- The electrification of Japan's railways began gradually in the latter half of the Meiji era, mainly for city trams. In 1922, four types of electric locomotives were imported from various countries when the Tokaido Main Line was electrified. After comparative testing on the Chuo Line, Yamanote Line, and Keihin Line, which were electric train sections at the time, 17 1040 series and 9 6000 series were introduced in 1923.
- There was almost no difference in appearance between the two, only slight differences in performance and specifications.
- Following a designation change in 1928, these were renamed ED50 to ED52, and from 1930 onwards, their gear ratios were gradually changed to suit mountain routes for use on the Chuo East Line, becoming ED17 and ED18 (first generation).
- Although there were problems with parts supply and breakdowns due to the use of imported parts, reliability improved after domestic production of electrical parts was introduced during postwar equipment renovations, and the locomotive came to be affectionately known as the "Decker" after the English Electric Company's Decker Factory, where it was manufactured.
- All but one ED18 was merged into an ED17 after equipment renovations, but for the group operating in the northern part of the line, where axle load restrictions are strict, an additional running axle was added to the center of the powered bogie, and the group was renamed ED18 (2nd generation).
- ED18-2 was in service until 1979, and after the privatization of the Japanese National Railways in 1992, it was brought back into working order and became popular at events. However, it was retired in 2005 and is now preserved in static form at the SCMAGLEV and Railway Park.
