[Actual vehicle introduction]
- The 781 series was mainly operated on the limited express train between Sapporo and Asahikawa on the Hakodate Main Line, but in September 1990, the schedule was revised in order to cope with the increase in speed of express buses due to the opening of the Hokkaido Expressway, which resulted in a significant increase in the number of trains. The maximum speed of the train has been increased to 130km/h.
- The 785 series [Super White Arrow] was introduced at that time.
- Lightweight stainless steel body and the first AC train to use VVVF inverter control.
- It consists of 4 basic cars and 2 additional cars, and the front part is a penetrating type to enable detailed operation.
- Later, in 2002, we added regular reserved seat [U-seat cars] Moha 784/785-500 and changed it to a 5-car train.
- Since 2005, renovation work has been carried out and the exterior has changed.
- Although the number has been reduced due to the expansion of the successor 789 series, some vehicles are still in active use as of 2024.
