[About the actual machine]
- The Dassault Rafale is a fourth-generation multirole fighter jet developed indigenously by France.
- Developed for use by both the Air Force and Navy, the naval version being the Rafale M.
- The prototype first flew in 1986. It began deployment and operation in May 2001.
- 40 aircraft were produced and are in service aboard the French Navy's nuclear aircraft carrier, the Charles de Gaulle.
- The main wing is a clipped delta wing with canards on both sides of the cockpit.
- Powered by two SNACMA M88-2 turbofan engines, it has a maximum speed of Mach 1.8.
- The aircraft is armed with one 30mm GIAT30/M791 automatic cannon, and can carry up to 20,900 pounds of ordnance, including air-to-air missiles, anti-ship missiles, and land-targeting guided missiles.
- Combined with the Air Force version, it is active as a representative French fighter.
- Also in service with the French Navy's 12F Naval Aviation Squadron since 2001.
