- Altmark was built by Blohm & Voss in Hamburg.
- At the start of World War II in September 1939, Altmark was deployed to support Admiral Graf Spee in preparing for a commerce raiding campaign in the Atlantic.
- Altmark was renamed Uckermark on 6 August 1940.
- From late January 1941 onwards, Admiral Lütjens commanded the Gneisenau and Scharnhorst in the Atlantic to conduct commerce raiding operations.
- On 11 March, the two Scharnhorst-class battleships joined two supply ships, Uckermark and Elmland.
- On September 9, 1942, Uckermark left France for Japan.
- On the way, the ship replenishes the cruiser Michel and picks up oil in Indonesia for Japan.
- At 8:00 a.m. on November 24th of the same year, it arrived in Yokohama, Honshu.
- The fuel on board was handed over to the Japanese Army.
- On the night of the 28th of the same month, the ship docked at Yokohama Port's Shinko Wharf No. 8 quay.
- The explosion occurred around 1:40 p.m. on November 30th while the vessel was moored at Osanbashi Pier and an oil tank was being cleaned.
- A total of 102 people were killed in the accident, including 61 German Navy officers and soldiers, 36 Chinese workers, and 5 Japanese workers and residents. Many others were injured, some seriously, including local residents and workers, and Erwin Wickert, a German embassy staff member who had come to view the German Navy ship.
- In addition, four ships were lost: the German cruiser Thor, which was anchored in the Uckermark and nearby, the Australian passenger liner Leuthen, which was captured by Thor, and the Navy requisitioned ship Unkai Maru No. 3. The facilities in Yokohama Port were severely damaged.
