[Actual vehicle introduction]
The 50 series general-purpose passenger cars were manufactured between 1977 and 1982 to replace aging, old-style passenger cars across Japan and to utilize idle locomotives.
The body of the train was painted entirely red and it was affectionately known as the "Red Train."
The Kaikyo rapid train began operation with the opening of the Seikan Tunnel in 1988.
The 50 series 5000-type trains were used, which had been repainted in blue with white stripes, were fitted with air conditioning, were made to handle higher speeds, and had modifications to the interior accommodations.
In 2002, with the extension of the Tohoku Shinkansen to Hachinohe, daytime passenger trains through the Seikan Tunnel were replaced by electric express trains [Hakucho] and [Super Hakucho], and the rapid train [Kaikyo] was taken out of service.
Most of the 50 series 5000-series cars were scrapped by around 2003, but OhaFu 50-5007, OhaFu 51-5003, and OhaFu 51-5004 were converted into "disaster prevention replacement cars" to be used in the event of an emergency on the Tsugaru Kaikyo Line.
The carriages were painted in a single color, blue No. 20, and were kept on standby at Kikonai Station and Tsugaru-Imabe Station in case of an emergency until 2016, just before the Hokkaido Shinkansen opened.

The words "Disaster Prevention Substitute Vehicle" are printed on the side of the blue No. 20 vehicle.
