The prototype first flew in October 1938.

The cockpit housed four crew members: the pilot, the bombardier/nose gunner, the dorsal gunner/radio operator, and the flight engineer/rear gunner.
They served on all fronts until the end of the war.
Since its introduction in 1941, it has undergone continuous improvements and various variations have been produced.
One of them is the Do217K2, which is specialized for anti-ship attacks.
This aircraft was developed to carry the Fritz X guided bomb developed by the German military.
It was based on the Do217K1 night fighter equipped with a BMW 801L engine, but had an expanded wingspan.
The guided bomb [Fritz X] is an armor-piercing projectile weighing 3,450 pounds.
